Bimbamboo aspires to join the growing number of people who want to reduce and hopefully even start to reverse the negative impact we are placing on our global environment.
We aim to do this by offering quality, affordable clothing made from bamboo – a sustainable, eco-friendly raw material.
We have taken a great deal of time and care in selecting our suppliers and we are confident that every item we sell has been made with minimal environmental impact.
The majority of bamboo fibre comes from China. With the increase in market appeal most manufacturers work to eco-certification programmes in the processing of bamboo fibre and where possible we have selected end products that have been made in the EU and in particular in the UK.
We feel it is important to point out that the bamboo fibre used in almost all clothing is chemically manufactured. Bamboo is a regenerated cellulose fibre similar to rayon or modal. For this reason bamboo clothing and textiles cannot be regarded as being totally green or organic. There are new methods of processing coming into use such as a modification adapted from Lyocell which uses weak amine oxides. Also nano-technologies are being developed whereby particles of bamboo charcoal are embedded into fabrics such as cotton. We are often told that no chemicals have been used during the manufacturing process - however we do not feel we can guarantee that this is always the case. In spite of this knowledge still feel bamboo is a viable alternative due to its many naturally occuring properties that are of benefit to us and our environment.
We have studied the facts, reports and many scientific studies that have been carried out on bamboo all concluding that bamboo fibre creates the perfect fabric for the 21st century – and we have to agree.
Like any fabric used in the clothing industry there are variations in quality and finish so we have personally tested everything we sell by incorporating the products into our daily lives. Everything has been washed and tumble dried many times to test for wear, shape retention and durability. Our conclusion – fantastic! Bamboo fabric really is hard to fault and when you do think your bamboo product has finally reached the end of its useful life it can be returned back to nature, as it is 100% biodegradable.
One thing you will notice as you browse through our online shop is that some of our products are made from a blend of bamboo and cotton/organic cotton. Why? As bamboo fibre is so soft and silky the addition of cotton to certain products helps to give shape and structure. We found this to be particularly so for towels and bathrobes. However as manufacturers perfect their spinning and weaving techniques we expect to see the cotton content reduce.
The range of products available is still relatively limited but as more people become aware of bamboo, the fabric, we feel demand, choice and production will increase.
We aim to keep our packaging to a minimum. We use degradable mailbags where possible (this also helps to keep postal charges low) and our cartons/boxes are fully recyclable.
We hope the information provided on our website will inspire you to buy bamboo clothing. If you do and you like it, please spread the word!
